How to Keep a Mattress from Sliding on Metal Frame
Sufficient sleep is one of the recommendations for overall good health. Yet, a sliding mattress is an annoying thing that can interrupt good sleep an intimate session.
There are simple solutions such as using Velcro strips, non-slip mattress pads, elastic straps, or rubber matting to some complex solutions like buying a new mattress or getting a new bed frame that fits tightly to your mattress. We can effortlessly fix this nuisance quickly. Let’s learn how:
A non-slip mattress pad or rubber matting
Non-slip mattress pads are specially designed with a rubber material to prevent your mattress from sliding off your bed frame.
Measure your bed size and get a pad slightly larger than your bed, remove your mattress from the bed and place the non-slip mattress pad on the bed frame. Trim off the excess sides or leave it as is. Make sure the non-slip pad is not smaller than your bed size for maximum slip prevention. Most non-slip mattress pad models like the GORILLA GRIP Slip-Resistant Mattress Gripper Pad come in standard sizes, but you can always trim yours for a better fit. If you have a California king size and can’t find a size big enough, you should join two pads side by side and trim off the excess.
If you can’t access the non-slip mattress pad, a rubber matting usually used for flooring works just as perfectly and is also relatively cheaper. Trim to your bed’s size and place them underneath your mattress.
Another alternative is using yoga mats, but these are most suitable for twin beds.
Velcro strips
Velcro strips have an adhesive on each side, which you stick on the bed frame and the corresponding piece on the underside of your mattress. Remove the cover on the adhesive side and place several hook Velcro strips strategically on the mattress’s bottom side. Place them around the sides and some in the middle. Then place the corresponding loop Velcro strips on the bed frame, making sure the hook and loop sizes match correctly. The strips attach to each other hence stopping your mattress from frequently moving.
Remember, the bigger the bed, the more strips you may need,
Foam rubber strips
Another option is to use foam rubber strips to prevent your mattress from slipping. The strips have an adhesive side, and the other is a slip-resistant foam that will help keep the mattress in place. Measure the width and length of your bed and cut the strips accordingly. Then stick the strips on the edge of the bed frame with the foam side facing up.
Vacuum clean under your mattress
We often tend to forget to clean under our mattresses, and the oils, dust, and dirt that collects create a slippery film causing the mattress to slip off your bed easily. To fix this, vigorously vacuum all sides of your mattress to remove any debris that may have collected over time.
Carpet tape
You can use carpet tape, usually used for carpets and rugs, to keep your mattress stationary. Place the carpet tape on the bed frame’s sides, peel off the cover on the top adhesive side, and then place your mattress on it. This carpet tape should prevent your mattress from skidding, but it’s generally a short-term solution.
Bed frame or mattress model
If your mattress slips because it is too small for your bed frame, the solution can be either buying a new bed frame or a new mattress. Getting a new bed frame that fits your bed, usually one with a headboard and footboard will prevent your mattress from sliding. You can also get a one-sided mattress. One-sided mattresses are designed to face down, flatter on the bottom, and have a non-slip material on the bottom side, keeping your mattress from sliding off the metal frame.

A cheaper option can be wedging the sides of the mattress to fit into the metal frame snugly. You can use towels or t-shirts on the edges to fill up space. However, this method is temporary and may require frequent altering.
Elastic straps
Elastic straps can hold a mattress in place when Velcro strips and rubber mats prove unsuccessful, particularly on a metal frame. Wrap the elastic straps from under the corner of the bed base and over and around your mattress. Keep in mind that these straps may leave indentations on softer foam mattresses.
Can you put a mattress directly on a metal frame?
No, a mattress needs extra support on a metal frame. You’ll need to place something flat and firm like a wooden board or a box spring; otherwise, your mattress foam will fall through or deform quickly due to lack of even support or a foundation.
What Causes a Mattress to Slide
There are various reasons for sliding mattresses, and knowing the purpose behind a sliding mattress will help you fix the issue competently. Below are some of the common reasons;
-
Lack of friction
Little or no friction is the most common cause of a sliding mattress. Sliding happens because the material casing the mattress does not have enough grip against the bed to keep it in place, or you have a double-sided mattress that does not have a non-slip bottom side.
-
Aged mattress
Even for quality mattresses, they can only last for so long before they get too old and saggy. Old mattresses will often slide due to grease or dirt accumulating on the underside, in contact with the bed frame.
-
Poor support
Having a bed base with poor support, such as; the slats being too far apart, a bed frame too big for your mattress, or a platform bed with a slippery surface, will often cause slipping problems. Beds that do not have a headboard or footboard cannot properly center the mattress on the bed.
From a few simple adjustments like using tapes and rubber matting to drastic measures like changing your mattress or bed frame can prevent a sliding mattress on a metal frame. Whatever your option is, we hope the information above helps you sleep better.
