How to Measure for a Knee Brace
Getting the right size of a knee brace depends on accurate measurements, which will give you better support and proper healing in case of an existing knee injury.
The measuring methods vary from one company to another; therefore, it is essential to have your knee brace manual in hand.
What You Need
- A flexible tape measure or string/cord and a ruler
- Washable felt pen
- A chair if you cannot stand on your alone
- A reference knee brace manual
- Someone to help
Taking the Measurements
- Stand up straight. You should ask someone to help with the process.
- If you cannot stand, sit on the edge of a chair, and straighten your leg with your heel on the floor.
- Using the tape measure, measure around the knee cap, and record the measurement. The measuring tape should not be too tight or too loose.
- If you are using a string or cord, make sure it lies against your skin with no folds, and then measure with a ruler.
- Measure 6 inches or 15cm from the center of your knee cap and mark with the washable felt pen above the knee joint (this distance from your knee cap varies, check with the manufacturer’s customer support).
- From this marked point, measure the circumference of your lower thigh and record.
- Repeat; measure 6 inches or 15cm from the center of your knee cap and mark with the washable felt pen below the knee cap (this distance from your knee cap varies, check with the manufacturer’s customer support).
- From this marked point, measure the circumference of your calf and record.
Sizing Your Knee Brace
- Check the measurements recorded on the chart that comes with your brace then pick the size corresponding to your measurements.
- In general, these measurements are categorized into small(S), medium(M), large(L), and extra-large(XL) sizes.
- If you are in-between sizes, it is advisable to size down as knee braces expand with wear. You should consult the customer support for advice.
Tip to remember: If your knee is swollen or inflamed, it is advisable to first treat the inflammation before measuring as this may give you inaccurate measurements.
